The Reuven Field Foundation and Peter McVerry Trust have mutually decided to terminate our 3 year partnership after the first year of operations of the Rural Mobile Mental Health Unit.

From September 2023 to May 2024 we funded a Clinical Nurse Specialist (Mental Health Nurse) who was able to visit 70 individuals and families housed by Peter McVerry Trust after a period of homelessness, who have a diagnosed mental health condition with no capacity to travel to a mental health center for treatment.

In total 215 in person visits were made in the following counties:

  • Westmeath, Carlow, Kildare, Offaly, Laois, Kilkenny and Wicklow

In total, there were 46 individuals referred for specialist treatment or services and 40 of these made progress or had positive outcomes. This has a huge impact on the quality of life of some of the most vulnerable and marginalised people in Ireland.

I’m incredibly proud of the work we were able to accomplish in the first year of operations, and while we have made the decision not to proceed with year 2 and 3 of the partnership with Peter McVerry Trust we will be sharing the outcomes and reports with the HSE with a request to invest more of the annual health budget in community based mental health services as the outcomes are incredibly important and positive for those affected.

Sadly, the Irish Government continues to under invest in mental health services – here is a quote from Mental Health Reform Ireland (source):

“Since 2020, the percentage of the health budget allocated to mental health has decreased every year from 6% to 5%. This is less than half of what the recommended spend is internationally. The UK spends 13% – 14% of its health budget on mental health. The Government must increase spending on mental health to 10% of the total health budget in line with Sláintecare. This funding is critical to ensure Ireland has an effective and responsive mental health system that meets the needs of the population.”

The Reuven Field Foundation will be announcing our next project very soon, as we continue our mission to highlight the urgency to make mental health services available to all.
